Fuddy Meers = Funny Mirrors

In the mood for a disturbingly dark, yet hilariously humorous, comedy?
If so, have I got the play for you, dear hedonists.
Last Friday, your Hedonista attended the opening night of Fuddy Meers on a media pass, a play by David Lindsay-Abaire that’s running at The Phoenix Theatre June 4th through the 27th, 2010.

Left to right: Millet (David Bailey), Gertie (Melanie Calderwood, stabbing Hinkey Binkey) and a confused Claire (Christine Mosere). (Richard - Steve Heiret - is under the table). Photo courtesy of Designit Photography, used with permission.
This play revolves around a 7-member cast of characters who are so quirky and broken it’s funny (albeit in a very disturbing-I-can’t-believe-I’m-laughing-but-I can’t-help-myself kind of way). Think of that movie 50 First Dates with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, then replace the cast of upperific optimists with one of downerful pessimists.
Claire (played by Christine Mosere), is the main character who’s memory is erased every time she falls asleep, so each and every morning she tries to figure out exactly who she is. (Sound familiar?) On this particular day, many things come to light that many of the other characters would much rather have kept in the dark.
There’s even a potty-mouthed, maniacal puppet named Hinkey Binkey (manipulated by Millet, both characters played by David Bailey) that delivers some of the most shockingly amusing lines in the play … but perhaps the most impressive part of the play was the slurred articulation of Gertie, Claire’s mother, who has recently suffered from a stroke; David Lindsay-Abaire created his own “stroke talk” – e.g., “Fuddy Meeers” = “Funny Mirrors” – which Melanie Calderwood pulls off with Gertie with ease.
In short, Fuddy Meers is wickedly witty, perfectly poignant, and alarmingly accurate with its spotlight that is cast upon the dark side of the human heart.
Regular tickets are $18, with youth/seniors/military discounted tickets only $15.
