Glad for Plaid Tidings

We interrupt our regularly scheduled 4-part “Teaophilic Treatise” series to bring you the following news flash….

I admit that I was a tad skeptical about going to see the musical Plaid Tidings at Arts West, even with a media invite (for those of you who don’t happen to be in the know, this is the winter holidays edition of Forever Plaid). This musical is playing now through December 27th (online tix $34 each).

I mean, c’mon … four egghead-types as crooners? Are you kidding me? But then an image of Buddy Holly popped into my head … and suddenly I decided to give it a try.

I was not disappointed; in fact, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Plaid Tidings is an admittedly all-around pleasant gift of the season.

Forever Plaid is dedicated to the ol’ proverbial “good guys” – you know the types. Here I quote directly from the dedication to be found in the Forever Plaid program:

“… to the guys who wheeled the projector carts for the AV club; to the guys who saved their allowance to give their parents a special night on the town for their anniversary; to the guys who carried an extra handkerchief; to the guys who never went beyond first base, and if they did, they didn’t tell anyone. We Salute You!”

Your Hedonista always loved those guys (in fact, some of her best friends are “good guys”): those guys in college (or, for some, even high school) who held back your hair while you gave partially-digested offerings to the porcelain god(s) and tucked you into bed afterward without so much as trying to get to first base, much less hit a homer. (Then again, on second thought, you more than likely did smell of vomit. But I digress, dear hedonists.)

In short, this production screams – er, I mean sings – WOW. This quartet’s harmonization is simply divine. Although in the show they convince you that they’ve died and gone to heaven, the one who really has is you as the privileged audience.

For from winter holiday favs (and I do mean all of them … well, at least a line or two, anyway) to the tones of a wooing crooner’s innermost heart, Plaid Tidings will sweep you off your feet (unlike those adorable “good guys” of yesteryear). Who says the good guys don’t get the girl and win in the end? Certainly not Plaid Tidings. So swing on Smudge (John W. Bartley), Frankie (Aaron C. Finley), Jinx (Ryan McCabe) and Sparky (Daniel Stoltenberg) – your Hedonista’s got  your back. (Just promise to hold back my hair this holiday season, will ya?)

Go get in the spirit & see this utterly fab production. (You’ll be plaid you did.)
