Without a doubt, sex is one of the hedonistic pleasures (at least for some). Reading is also a very hedonistic pleasure (again, at least for some).

So, it seems only fitting that our first book review here at Heed the Hedonist be about, well … sex. But this is not your typical sexy book.

In fact, it’s not sexy at all. More … technical. Not to mention damn funny.

In Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, author (”authoress” isn’t used much these days) Mary Roach takes a truly tasteful, pragmatic, and dry-humored approach to the scientific exploration of the ins and outs – both literally and figuratively – of sex.

Highlights include “who knew” moments – like discovering what vaginal lubrication consists of (blood plasma) – and a story of Mary and her husband Ed – unfortunately a name that these days is also associated with the acronym for erectile dysfunction – having sex in an MRI tube while her husband chats with the observing doctor and carries on a conversation that could easily take place in a grocery store checkout line.

A worthwhile read for anyone interested in the subject – and science – of sex.
